How to change the turcon seals in a GDS 64MPa Cell

The following guide goes through the replacement of the two Turcon seals for the upper chamber.  It would be worth photographing each stage to aid with the reassembly process, which will be conducted in the reverse order.

Remove the internal load cell from the end of the ram. Disconnect the cable from the data logger. When rotating the load cell ensure the cable is free to rotate. For reference on removing the load cell please watch the video below.

This step is only required if the seal in position 44 of Diagram A below also needs to be replaced.

Upper Ram Seal (Pos 44 Diagram B)

  • Remove the three bolts located around position 12. This will allow the removal of the retaining ring. (Slide this over the top of the ram)

  • Remove the six bolts located in position 9. This will allow the removal of the upper chamber housing. Slide this over the top of the ram.

  • Turning over the upper chamber housing will show four small fixing screws (position 54) holding in the seal-housing retainer located at position 10. Remove this to gain access to the first seal location at position 44 of Diagram B.

Either remove the outer O-ring seal so it is not lost or ensure it is secure in its location – Position 40

Lower Ram Seal (Pos 44 Diagram A)

  • To access the second seal the ram will need to be lifted out from the cell top. With the load cell removed, this can be lifted through the top of the cell.

  • Using a small hook or plastic edge to avoid damage to any of the metal components remove the front wearing seal followed by the backing O-ring. Replace with the new seal.

  • Reassemble the items as removed, paying special attention to the outer seal located in position 40 (Diagram B). Use silicon grease to old this in place if required upon assembly. Leaking will occur if this seal is not seated correctly.
